Family Woodworking Heirlooms
Some of our family woodworking “heirlooms” are actually very simple pieces. And your small woodworking projects can be too.
Your woodworking does not have to be fine furniture. And it is not necessary to be a great woodworker to create items that will be enjoyed and cherished for generations. Let me explain.
One of my grandfathers started doing small wood projects such as building simple bookshelves and small tables after he was well up in his years. In fact, I think he had already retired from about 5 careers when he started woodworking. Unlike other family woodworkers, my granddaddy did not have the big woodworking shop or many Tools. What he built, though, was simple and precious.
He took plain wood boards, mostly pine, and cut them to fit together in easy and yet sturdy construction. He was not after the fine elegance that defines most treasured furniture. He built dozens and dozens of these little woodworking projects so he could give each of us several. His pieces have been used through the years in various capacities. From toy storage boxes in the kid’s bedrooms to end tables at the family cabin to TV cabinets at college apartments.
My grandfather’s creations are now being dispersed out to a third generation of his descendants. He would be so proud to see his “furniture” being used by teenagers that don’t even remember him when he was alive. And yet they have something to know “of” him with and to hold on to as some of their family’s legacy.
These simple woodworking creations are timeless and very durable. We have never felt like we could not “use” them. Many kids have climbed on them, they have been moved from home to dorm to apartment, etc. And yet they are not damaged. A few bumps actually make them more precious. They are part of the family. And now tested with time.
The point of this story is… don’t limit yourself. Small woodworking projects can be “fine” furniture or a “useful” treasure. Make it fun and make something that can be enjoyed by others.
