A jewellery designer or jewelry designer is a person who is responsible for rendering originally unique jewellery creations and usually constructs them as well. By profession this person would be trained in design and metalsmithing. Historically jewellery designers originated as goldsmiths in the cultural aspects of Etruscan Civilization and became more dominant through ancient Greek and Roman cultures. In Ancient Macedonia from Thessaloniki, the art of milling and rolling 24K Gold rose to the highest form and ignited the origins of what later 18th century jewelers such as the family of Castellani used in Italian archaeological jewellery.

Contemporary jewellery designers are a common attraction for almost everyone who is associated with gold creations, are often professionals with knowledge of gemology, metal smithing and rendering in order to cater to buyers. Designs can be initiated in a special jewelers model wax or even in metal (silver) in order to create a mold where an unlimited number of the pieces can be cast in gold, silver or platinum. Designer jewellery is expected to be popular this Christmas despite the current economic climate tightening shopping budgets for many people, according to Beaverbrook’s director Daniel Brown. Retail analyst Verdict has said that 2010 will be the best Christmas trading period for three years as they expect sales to increase by nearly two per cent to £85.2 billion with consumers forecasted to spend an extra £1.6 billion on presents and gifts.
